Charity Shield 2005 – Chelsea vs Arsenal
The new English Premier League (“EPL”) kicks off next week, as a traditional curtain raiser, the last season champion will take on the FA Cup winner in a Charity match.
This season, it will be Chelsea, the league champion, against Arsenal, the FA Cup Winner and last year’s runner-ups in the league. On all accounts, this should be a fiercely battled London Derby match. However, being the Charity Shield, both teams, at best will treat it as another pre-season warm-up match and avoid any injuries. Even though, the winner of the shield is often cursed and will end-up with nothing in the season, I believe the winner will gain a psychological advantage when the actual season kicks off on 13 Aug 05.
How will Arsenal manage without their inspirational captain, Viera, sold to Juventus for £13.75 m? Will new £10 m signing Helb fits into the vacated space in the center? Chelsea’s team are probably more settled down with Crespo returning from the loan spell with AC Milan to lead the attack. Rueben will still be the key to Chelsea’s continued success this season.
Being a Tottenham Hotspur fan, I hope that it will be an all-or-nothing battle between the two London clubs with key players picking up injuries that will plague them for the rest of the season. If there have to be a winner, let it be Chelsea, and please by a huge margin, 10-0 will be nice.
In reality, I believe it will be a draw, 1-1, with Lampard and Van Persie scoring the goal.
Can’t wait for the new season to start…..to see the new look Spurs gunning for glory this season…..
Post Notes: Chelsea won 2-1, though Arsenal had all the possession.
